Attempts by functionaries of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) to involve some forebears of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the infamous �Kulungugu Grenade� attack on Dr Kwame Nkrumah, first President of Ghana, has backfired. As part of the vicious propaganda against the antecedents of the NPP, officials of the ruling party have been making frantic efforts to twist the country�s political history by stating that Obetsebi Lamptey, one of the founding fathers of this nation who was a member of the �Big Six�, threw the grenade at Dr Nkrumah at Kulungugu in 1962 in order to eliminate him. In a press statement to set the records straight, members of �All-Die Be Die� Fun Club, a political pressure group in the NPP, said attempts by the NDC to rewrite the country�s political history will flop because the discerning citizenry cannot be blinded by the lies. Kwame Baffoe aka Abronye DC, the Brong Ahafo Regional Coordinator of the group said, �It is unfortunate, misleading and untrue for some serial liars in the NDC to always say that the late Obetsebi Lamptey threw the Kulungugu grenade.� According to him, the present leadership of the NPP and forebears that fought for Ghana�s political independence, are patriotic and loyal citizens of the country and will never do anything untoward to destroy the democratic culture they championed in the past. Mr. Baffoe said the NPP and its forebears have never been the purveyor of violence at any point in the country�s political history. He indicated that members of the party have endured despicable violence in their efforts to ensure a free, democratic country. On August 1, 1962, Dr Kwame Nkrumah was returning from a successful meeting at Tenkudugu with President Yameogo of then Upper Volta, now Burkina Faso and when they got to Kulungugu, Ghana a hand grenade was thrown at him after he got out of his car to greet a group of school children. He narrowly escaped death, but a school boy and policeman were killed. Over 50 people, including the Regional Commissioner of Northern Ghana, were injured. Mr. Baffoe pointed out that strangely on the day of the attack, Dr Nkrumah�s close confidants such as Adamafio, Ako Adjei and Cofie Cabbe, who normally accompanied the president on were absent. �This was a clear indication that Nkrumah�s followers were tipped off on that fateful day,� he stated. He said on September 2, 1962 another explosion took place outside the Flagstaff House, where an eleven-year-old girl was killed and 63 people got injured. He quoted Krobo Adusei, Nkrumah�s Minister of Agriculture at the time as saying �since the wages of sin is death, Adamafio must pay for his deeds.� The �All-Die Be Die� Brong Ahafo Coordinator took a swipe at members of the NDC for rewriting the country�s history to achieve their vicious agenda.
