Court Begins Trial Over Ghana Telecom Sale

An Accra commercial court will today, begin trial on the suit filed against the sale of Ghana Telecom (GT) to UK telecom giant, Vodafone International. The court has for over a year now gone through procedures to determine whether or not it has jurisdiction to hear the suit. The issue of jurisdiction and whether or not the plaintiff has any locus standi in the matter, delayed hearing of the case. The suit was filed by Professor Agyeman Badu Akosah and six others, seeking the abrogation of the sale of governments 70 per cent share in Ghana Telecom to Vodafone. They initiated the action as Ghanaian citizens. The case has now been assigned to High Court judge, Gertrude Torkornu with Bright Akwetey as legal counsel for the plaintiffs. In his comments to Citi News, Kwame Jantuah, one of the seven persons who filed the suit against government said the new judge seems eager to get the case underway.
