Members of the Nadowli District Assembly have been presented with 74 motorbikes and warned to ride them with care to avoid road accidents. The package is part of government's initiative to provide assembly members with means of transport to enable them to visit their electoral areas and monitor and evaluate on-going development projects. Mr. Abu Kansangbata, Nadowli District Chief Executive, who presented the motorbikes said Ghana was losing its critical human resource through road accidents. Such regrettable deaths were source of worry to government and advised the Assembly members to avoid using the motorbikes to cause more carnage on the road. He said the Assembly was prepared to organise training programme for those of them who were either not perfect or did not know how to ride motorbikes. �Do not haste in your quest to ride the motorbikes because that could lead to your involvement in accidents. Ghana needs you. Your death through accident would be detrimental to our development effort�, Mr. Kansangbata said. He said the Assembly would call back the members at the appropriate time for registrations and labeling of the motorbikes and appealed to them to handle the bikes properly so that they could be used to help generate more revenue for the assembly. On ownership, Mr. Kansangbata said the motorbikes were meant for the electoral areas and not for the individual assembly members and therefore should be used for the interest of the people. He appealed to assembly members not to limit their activities and operations to educating the people on grassroots governance alone but to also show more interest in the welfare and good health of them. Mr. Kansangbata suggested to the assembly members to make the motorbikes available to sick people, especially pregnant women who might want to reach out to health facilities to deliver or seek medical counseling. Naa Abu Abdrahaman, a member of the house, said government has provided them with the motorbikes to enable them to carry out their official duties to enhance grassroots governance. He advised the members to ride motorbike with caution and also obey road and traffic regulations and as well get their motorbikes registered. Naa Abdrahaman thanked the Government for creating 42 new districts to bring governance and development to the doorsteps of the people. Another beneficiary, Mr. Eric Dakurah on behalf of members of the assembly, said the provision of the motorbikes was government�s aim to deepen decentralization and grassroots governance. He gave the assurance that the members would use the motorbikes to supervise projects and reach out to the electorate and listen to their views and concerns and bring them back to the assembly for discussion. In a related development, the first batch of 63 young girls in Nadowli were also presented with sewing machines under the Dress Making module of the National Youth Employment Programme Mr. Kansangbata urged the girls to use the skills that they had acquired through their training to improve on their livelihoods and avoid migration.
