Benyiwa Doe Boycotts Kufuors Award

After her failed efforts to prevent the chiefs and people of Asebu Traditional Area in the Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese (AAK) District of the Central Region from honouring former John Agyekum Kufuor, Ama Benyiwa Doe, over the weekend boycotted the Apayemkese Festival celebrated by the people in the area. The Central Regional minister and the Vice President, John Dramani Mahama, did not even send a representative to grace the occasion even though their names were on the programme. Their action gave room for people around to say all kinds of negative things about them since Benyiwa Doe, who earlier seemed not to be happy with the Traditional Councils decision to honour Mr. Kufuor, had gone on air creating the impression that there was tension in the area. She called for the postponement of the festival but the chiefs did not agree with her. The durbar grounds become electrified when Mr. Kufuor, together with his entourage, arrived around 2:20pm in his Land Cruiser. The people at the ground showered all kinds of praises on Mr. Kufuor who looked very energetic and handsome. The 6th Apayemkese Festival, which was on the theme Harnessing the Energy of the Youth for Development, attracted thousands of people drawn from all walks of lives including prominent chiefs, politicians, executive directors and other bigwigs. The paramount chief of the area, Okatakyi Dr. Amanfi, said the traditional area had witnessed peace despite some challenges with succession in some communities which sometimes threatened to derail the gains they had chalked. Dr. Amanfi expressed concern about the high rate of unemployment in the area, adding that the situation had compelled the young people to migrate to other areas. He appealed to the government to make a conscious effort to direct some of the oil related industries to the region to help create employment.
