A former head of the Ghana FA, Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, has described as false, claims by agents of Alfred Woyome, a financier of the ruling NDC, that he (Woyome) played a vital role leading to Ghana winning the bid to host the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations.
Responding to assertions by people close to Woyome that he lobbied through the late Libyan President Muamar Ghadaffi, for the northern African country, which was a strong contender to decline for Ghana to win the bid, Mr. Nyaho-Tamakloe said Ghana won the hosting right on its own merit.
�I was the president of the Ghana Football Association when we bid for CAN 2008,� the NPP firebrand recalled. �I was there together with my deputy who was then Dr. Kofi Amoah and the minister then was Hon. Kwadwo Baah Wiredu. �
He added, �It was a very hot contest, Libya contested very strongly, they even tried to buy some of the delegates right at the conference hall, and despite all these we defeated Libya, we won on merit.
"We presented our case, backed by films we put together, we won. We beat Libya and that was how we won the bid for CAN 2008. �
�No one should deceive anybody in this country that one Woyome or whatever he is called was the one who went to talk to the President for Libya to pull out of the competition, It is never true, Libya took part in the competition and they were defeated by Ghana. �
