Cocaine Shortage Hits Ghettos...

As the inquiry into how cocaine in the custody of a court became a sodium carbonate is going on, The Enquirer newspaper can state authoritatively that various ghettos where cocaine is sold in smaller quantities for consumers have been hit by shortage. The stuff, as it is called in areas that are well noted for its sale, is very hard to come by. Checks by The Enquirer from Tema Site One and Two, Tudu, Osu Stable, Nima and Adabraka revealed that they are all experiencing shortages. The current value of one kilo of cocaine in Ghana is between $40,000 and $41,000. However, the prices have shot up to between $43,000 and $44,000 because of the shortage. Similar shortage occurred when the Kufuor administration set up the Georgina Wood Committee to unravel the MV Benjamin missing cocaine issue. The Enquirers investigations have proved that the situation was because the barons who sell the cocaine to the street pushers have all gone underground because of the speed with which the government ordered the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) to look into the circumstances that led to the cocaine becoming sodium carbonate. The Enquirer gathered that the barons are scared that the current investigations into the sodium carbonate saga would lead to certain names popping up. When The Enquirer visited Tudu, the usual busy joint for cocaine addicts, popularly called junkies, it was without the usual bustle. The story was not different at Adabraka Sahara, as the users had all deserted the ghettos. A reliable contact which The Enquirer established during the MV Benjamin saga, said some of their suppliers have fled the country within days that the inquiry started. He said that the barons, although, may not be linked with the inquiry, they were afraid that the BNI may pick some important leads. He told The Enquirer that the pushers are extremely angry and disturbed because business has always been good during the yuletide. Me in particular, I have some good customers in London and they come down every Christmas and they are good guys because they can buy more stuff, he said. He said that they have been combing the whole Accra and Tema to locate a baron who may help them secure some of the cocaine but they have all gone underground.
