Fire Guts NPP Office

Fire has gutted the Obuasi Constituency office of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), destroying property worth about GH4,000. No one was hurt. Items destroyed in the blaze included two computers, a printer, executive chairs and vital documents. But for the timely intervention of fire personnel, the fire would have spread to other parts of the building. The cause of the fire was not immediately known but party officials suspected it started from an adjoining seamstresss shop. The Obuasi Constituency Secretary of the party, Mr Enoch Anhwere Afoakwa, told the Daily Graphic that the destruction caused by the fire was a major blow to the partys activities in the constituency, especially as the 2012 election campaign was about to start. According to him, the fire started about 4:30 a.m. on January 1, 2012. He said people who saw smoke coming out of the office informed the Ghana National Fire Service but when the personnel got to the scene, massive destruction of the office had already been caused. However, the fire fighters managed to bring the blaze under control before it could spread to other parts of the building. Mr Afoakwa suspected a live electric iron in the adjoining shop caused the fire. He stated that the constituency was determined to put the disaster behind it and look for an alternative office where it could continue with its operations.
