NDC MP Chased Away By Constituents

But for the timely intervention of security personnel, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Mion Constituency of the Northern region, Dr. Ahmed Alhassan Yakubu would have been lynched by irate youth of his party in the constituency. Dr. Yakubu, who reportedly travelled to the constituency with some security personnel ahead of vetting on Tuesday, incurred the wrath of the youth, who upon spotting him, hurled stones at his vehicle. He was warned not to step out of the vehicle as aggrieved youth at Sambu threatened to vent their spleen on him as a result of unknown reasons. Daily Guide gathered that the MP failed to honour an invitation by the paramount chief of the Mion traditional area after the announcement of the creation of the Mion District. Sources said sub-chiefs of the area claimed the conduct of the MP smacks of gross disrespect and hinted plans to revolt against him should he attempt to seek re-election. According to sources, the MP claimed he was not an Andani and could therefore not fight for the cause of the Andanis in parliament. Others have accused him of failing to embark on a single project since he assumed office. Many aggrieved youth in the area therefore threatened to deal with him. The MP, Daily Guide gathered, upon reaching Tamale heard of the plans of the youth and requested police escort to travel to the constituency. But upon reaching Sambu, they attacked him for showing disrespect to the chiefs. It took the timely intervention of the police to save the situation as irate NDC youth were determined to deal with their legislator who sources say was only in the area to interact with section of the party faithful. Meanwhile, one of the aspirants, Ibrahim Tanko has vowed to resist attempts by Dr. Yakubu and his cohorts to disqualify him ahead of the primaries in the constituency. Speaking to Daily Guide before the vetting, he indicated that any attempt to disqualify him would deny the people of their mandate. According to him, the youth of the area, including some opinion leaders, have threatened to go berserk if the partys hierarchy disqualifies him. He stated that he was a credible candidate of good standing in the party, adding, I am aware the MP is doing all in his power to have me disqualified but any attempt will mean a victory for the NPP instead. We must endeavour to avoid defeat should our MP be mandated again, he remarked.
