President John Evans Atta Mills accompanied by some government officials and Ministers of State on Wednesday visited Senya Breku in the Central Region to console families of the 27 who died when a truck rammed into people and buildings last week. Thirty-five other victims are on admission at the Winneba Government Hospital. He described the incident as very painful and therefore, prudent for him to come and express his condolence. Speaking in Fante President Mills said, �Please accept our deepest condolence; our pain is your pain, and your pain is our pain. May this never happen again�. "On behalf of my team please accept our dearest condolence; we pray that our dear ones whom we have lost will find a good repose in the arms of the Lord." President Mills presented two cartons of schnapps and GHC2,000 as a token to the bereaved families. On his arrival at the Awutu Senya Local Government Council Hall, chiefs in the area and bereaved families received President Mills in an atmosphere of sadness as gospel music in mournful tones filled the background. Pockets of people discussed the tragedy caused by a water tanker with faulty brakes which run into a group of teenagers who were celebrating Christmas. Their photographs and ages with the exception of a year-old baby were displayed on a board in the hall where President Mills was received. Neyie Kofi Brebo VI, Acting President of Senya Traditional Council, expressed appreciation of the people to President Mills and the Government for the financial and material assistance received when the incident occurred. Vice President John Dramani Mahama, Central Regional Minister, Madam Ama Benyiwa Doe, District Chief Executives as well as the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) offered various forms of assistance to the bereaved families and those hospitalised. Government financed the mass burial and final funeral rites for the dead. Twenty-two out of the 35 victims on admission have been discharged while 13 others made up of seven women and six men are still on admission. Ms Hannah Tetteh, Minister of Trade and Industries and former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya, said government would not play politics with the tragedy but make sure the law was enforced on drivers who violate traffic regulations to serve as deterrent to others. A group of National Democratic Congress (NDC) members resident in Greater Accra and Central Regions also presented cash to the bereaved families. President Mills and his entourage visited the scene where prayers were said for the victims.
