Inmates of the Akuse Prisons in the Eastern Region have expressed concern about the congestion of their prison cells which was making life in confinement unbearable for them.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency during a recent visit to the Prison, the inmates appealed to the Government and all free Ghanaians to come to their aid.
The cells get excessively hot in the night even though ceiling fans in the rooms are working as most of them sleep on the bare floor, they lamented.
The Officer- In- Charge (OIC) of the Prisons Mr. Jacob Tagoe, later corroborated the prisoners� story and appealed for expansion of the prisons to ease the burden of congestion on the inmates.
He said the normal capacity for the prison cells is 61 but the number has increased astronomically to 256 for males and 11 for females.
�With this development, 70 male inmates now occupy a cell made up of 6 student double beds.
Mr.Tagoe appealed to the Government, philanthropists and corporate bodies to come to the aid of the prison.
