Tottenham 1 Wolves 1

TITLE talk at Tottenham was quickly silenced as Steven Fletcher stunned Harry Redknapp's men. Fletcher's opener at the Lane was cancelled out by Luka Modric - but Spurs fluffed their chance to join Manchester pair City and United at the top of the table. Redknapp knows if his side are to stay in the title race as the finishing line nears, then struggling opponents like Wolves must be seen off. But despite dominating most of the play, Spurs lacked a killer touch in front of goal. Redknapp insists it is difficult to find top players in the January transfer window. But he and chairman Daniel Levy must go all out to land a top striker if they are to be there challenging Alex Ferguson and Roberto Mancini come May. Wolves were in Tottenham's faces from the off and the home side were limited to a couple of efforts from Modric midway through the opening period. The Croatian fired wide from the edge of the box and also shot over as Harry Redknapp's men struggled to impose themselves. And Wolves broke the deadlock on 21 minutes after being awarded a debatable corner. The set-piece was whipped into the back post where Roger Johnson's header was cleared off the line by Modric before Fletcher turned home the rebound. Modric looked the most likely to make something happen for Spurs as he finally drew a save out of Wayne Hennessey with a 33rd-minute volley. David Edwards mistimed an effort from just inside the box as Wolves looked to catch Tottenham on the counter-attack. Emmanuel Adebayor then thought he had levelled the scoreline a minute before half-time but he was adjudged offside as he tapped in after Gareth Bale had prodded the ball towards goal. Tottenham returned after the break and continued to dominate possession while remaining wasteful in front of goal. Wolves looked a constant threat on the counter-attack and almost doubled their lead in the 49th minute when Emmanuel Frimpong latched on to a clearance inside the box and fizzed in a shot that was smartly saved by Brad Friedel. The save proved vital as Tottenham then broke with Bale finding Modric after some clever work by Van der Vaart and this time the Croatia midfielder's shot flew under Hennessey to draw Spurs level. The hosts were nearly ahead immediately afterwards as Modric's shot was well saved by Hennessey before the Welshman managed to readjust and hold onto Lennon's effort from the rebound. Spurs looked more threatening after the goal but Wolves managed to withstand heavy pressure. Van der Vaart came close to making it 2-1 but he failed to connect with an overhead kick from six yards. Frimpong, who was booked in the first half, then gave away a free-kick in dangerous territory after 65 minutes that the busy Van der Vaart just dropped wide of the post with Arsenal loanee Frimpong promptly substituted by McCarthy. Kyle Walker was a constant threat down the right flank for Spurs but he too fired high over the bar when a pass may have been a better option. Jermain Defoe was introduced with 17 minutes remaining, replacing Lennon, and almost made the difference three minutes later but could only shoot straight at Hennessey when well placed. There was a moment of controversy late on as Adebayor opted to contest a drop-ball in the Wolves box after a clash of heads between Johnson and Hennessey, but it came to nothing as the former Arsenal and Manchester City forward was penalised for a foul almost at the instant that the game resumed. The home crowd began to get anxious as, despite constant pressure, their attacking players were struggling to create chances against a dogged Wolves back line.
