Liverpool 2 Man Utd 1

DIRK KUYT fired a late winner as Liverpool capped off a memorable week to progress to the FA Cup fifth round. The Dutchman got on the end of Andy Carroll's flick in the 88th minute to knock out Manchester United four days after the Reds' Carling Cup semi-final success against Manchester City. The home side went ahead when Daniel Agger rose to head home Steven Gerrard's corner after Antonio Valencia had rattled Pepe Reina's woodwork early on. United equalised six minutes before the break after Rafael beat Jose Enrique down the right before playing in Ji-Sung Park who slotted past Reina. Both sides huffed and puffed in the second half but the game looked to be heading towards an Old Trafford replay until sub Kuyt's late intervention. United have now failed to win at Anfield since 2007 while the result was sweet revenge for Liverpool following their exit at the hands of their rivals last season. The backdrop to the game was provided by the incident involving Liverpool's Luis Suarez and Patrice Evra in the Premier League game at Anfield in October. Man of the moment Evra captained the United side and his every touch was booed by the Anfield crowd. However, while there was plenty of animosity in the ground between rival fans, there were very few flashpoints in the game. Kenny Dalglish rung the changes from the side that drew with City in the week and Maxi Rodriguez one of the men brought in drew an early save from David de Gea, who was back in the United net. At the other end Ryan Giggs' volley from Park's lay-off did not carry enough venom to require anything other than a regulation pick-up by Reina. The visitors then came inches away from taking the lead when Valencia cut in from the right and fired a shot at Reina's post. But it was the home side who opened the scoring. De Gea seemed more concerned with pushing away Carroll than dealing with Steven Gerrard's incoming corner as Agger rose the highest to head home in the 21st minute. United dominated possession after Liverpool's opener, but chances were at a premium until Park pounced to equalise six minutes before the break. Rafael shrugged off Enrique far too easily down the right as he raced down the byline and drilled over a low cross which Park smashed first time inside Reina's left-hand post. Early in the second half Giggs' cross from the left to the far post resulted in a moment of panic for Agger, but the Denmark international cleared with his knee under pressure from Valencia. Smalling had a similar episode of concern as he slipped when dealing with Enrique's pass into the penalty area, with Carroll's appeal for handball after he hit the ball at the centre-back falling on deaf ears. As the game started to open up Michael Carrick's defence-splitting pass saw Danny Welbeck knock the ball past Reina but Martin Skrtel got back to clear as the shot trickled goalwards. Gerrard was replaced by Liverpool's midweek hero Craig Bellamy with just under 20 minutes to go as both sides pressed for a winner. The game looked to be heading towards a draw until Kuyt another second-half sub became the hero with his first goal of the season. Reina's long boot forward was flicked on by Carroll over the head of Evra and the Dutch striker found himself clear through on goal to fire past De Gea at his near post. Kuyt should have put the game to bed moments later after Carroll had hit the bar but it wasn't to matter for the Reds who can now look forward to Sunday's draw.
