The University of Cape Coast (UCC) is constructing a modern Information Communication and Technology (ICT) as the key monument to commemorate its 50th anniversary which falls this year. �The ultra modern ICT centre is what will remain when the ashes of the celebrations have settled, and we need support to make it happen,� Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang, Vice Chancellor of UCC, said on Saturday. She enumerated a number of on-going projects at the various stages of completion to include satellite campuses for the Centre for Continuing Education (CCE) being constructed all over the country, a medical school diagnostic centre, new administration, business and agric school blocks, and an alumni complex. Also included are a fisheries college at Anomabo, language centre, science annex building, and a proposed science and mathematics teaching centre to retrain teachers at the basic level where students face a lot of challenges in math and science. Prof Agyeman said UCC was established in 1962 with only two faculties but can now boast of eight schools and faculties including a school of medical sciences in its fifth year and a proposed faculty of law. Prof Opoku Agyemang recounted UCC�s achievements since its establishment some 50 years ago and stressed that it was the first to innovate academic programmes such as Bachelor of Commerce Degree, Bachelor of Management Studies, Distance And Continuing Education in the dual mode, a laser and fiber optic centre, as well as a course unit and semester system. She said the university will still continue with other projects such as a school of pharmacy, this time with emphasis on plant medicine. The UCC despite all these achievements still envisages itself in the next 50 years as a university to be recognized as a �Centre of Excellence� in education and would strive to bridge the gap between the world of work and of learning by partnering very closely with industry, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang added.
