Isaac Osei Whacks Mills

THE MEMBER of Parliament (MP) for Subin, Isaac Osei has launched a blistering attack against President Mills accusing him of wrongly taking credit for the massive improvement in cocoa production in the country. He said the historic one million tonnes cocoa production target achieved lately came as a result of pragmatic measures put in place by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government led by former President Kufuor. The MP was addressing a large number of Subin residents last Friday during the fourth edition of his quarterly public forum in the constituency. Mr. Osei pointed out that the NDC administration did not play any meaningful role with regards to the sudden boost in cocoa production therefore President Mills and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) should stop making noise about it. The former head of Ghana Cocoa Board noted that in 2006 ex-President Kufuor tasked him and his management team to adopt effective strategies to help Ghana reach a target of one million tonnes in cocoa production. He said after seeking expert advice, he and his team targeted strategies to improve the quality of cocoa seeds. Government consequently went in for a $70 million loan from abroad which it invested heavily in improving cocoa seeds. Part of the loan was used to build cocoa warehouses at major cocoa production areas across the country among other things and this has yielded positive results, he explained. He said instead of showering praises on himself like he did during his recent state of the nation address, President Mills ought to quickly formulate better policies to sustain current cocoa production levels in the years to come. The programme which lasted more than five hours saw other MPs in attendance to offer support and explain current events in parliament and Ghana in general to the gathering. The Subin MP who touched on almost all current pressing national issues told the people not to make so much noise about the Woyome financial scandal adding that more damning revelations about how the current government was distributing Ghanas scanty resources to individuals would soon come out. Information available indicates that over GH600 million have been paid to other individuals as well in the name of judgment debt, he noted. On why the minority side decided to wear mourning clothes to parliament during the presidents address, Mr. Osei said it was symbolic and shows the country is mourning over the poor policies and programmes of the NDC administration. He said the red cards the minority MPs showed to the President were also symbolic because it was to prove to Ghanaians and the world that President Mills had failed woefully so he was addressing the House for the last time as president. He wondered what legacy the President would leave for Ghanaians when he eventually leaves office in 2013, saying he has not come out with a single programme to better the lives of the people so far. Mr. Osei entreated the populace to register when the voters register opens to enable them exercise their franchise during the upcoming polls adding if you are not 18 years old or more do not register.
