EC Demands Proof Of Nationality For Biometric Registration

All potential voters will be required to present proof of nationality before being registered in the upcoming voters registration exercise. The introduction of proof of nationality is part of the Electoral Commissions (ECs) legal amendment, currently before Parliament aimed at curbing election malfeasance such as under-age registration, non-citizen registration and multiple registrations which characterized previous exercises. This was disclosed by the Director of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Department of the EC, Mr. Hubert Akumiah, at a seminar organized by the Institute of Democratic Governance (IDEG) in Accra yesterday. Making a presentation on the topic: Preparation towards biometric voter registration and verification, Mr. Akumiah said persons claiming to be Ghanaians but who could not provide proof of identification would be required to fill a form as well as produce two Ghanaians to stand as surety, before being registered. The sureties must be able to provide recognized identification cards to prove that they are Ghanaians and that they know the person they are guaranteeing very well, he said. Mr. Akumiah emphasized the importance of the registration exercise and said without it, it would be difficult of the EC to verify the eligibility of voters and also plan well for elections.
