Girl Dies At March Past

What was meant to be a parade rehearsal towards the 55th independence celebrations of the country in the Volta Region has resulted in the death of a 14-year-old student of Ho Fiave Seventh-Day Adventist Junior High School. Goni Etornam, a JHS 1 student of the school, met her untimely death at the Ho Jubilee Park. Narrating the incident to Daily Guide, the head teacher of the school, Dora Serwah Acheampong, said the school was asked to provide a contingent of students to participate in the regional parade for the countrys 55th anniversary on 6th March this year. According to her, the deceased and other colleagues were in the contingent and reported at the Jubilee Park last Monday morning for rehearsals under the supervision of the Physical Education coordinators of the Ghana Education Service. She noted that Etornam collapsed during the rehearsal hours and was pronounced dead when she was rushed to the Volta Regional Hospital by the medical team of the Ghana Education Service. The body has since been deposited at the Ho Municipal Hospital morgue awaiting autopsy. The Ho Municipal Director of Education, Emmanuel Keteku, who sent his condolences to the bereaved family and school, noted that the directorate was awaiting the coroners report on the cause of death. In the meantime, the directorate is also in consultation with other stakeholders and top officials to decide whether to collect the corpse for burial or not. He asked parents not to let this unfortunate incident to prevent them from allowing their kids to take part in the historic activities. He assured them that measures such as Red Cross services, ambulances, snacks, medical care and others had been put in place to ensure that the incident did not recur. Mr. Keteku also advised pupils to feel free to complain in case they felt anything unusual within their system during rehearsals and the actual parade.
