Embezzlement at GBC Over GH31bn Expenses Cannot Be Accounted For

Financial accountability at the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) has hit bad light again, with a revelation that a gargantuan amount of GH3,154,308.26 in Administrative Expenses cannot be properly accounted for. The money, which represents Administrative Release to GBC by Government between 2005 and 2011, has been highlighted in pale ink by a recent interim report as money on whose use a full expenditure account cannot be traced. According to the Interim Audit Report by the State Enterprise Audit Corporation, the improper accounting for the over 31 billion happened under the tenure of embattled GBC Director of Finance, Johnson Kwabena Agyei. Mr. Kwabena Agyei, who served in that capacity during the tenure of the former Director General, William Ampem Darko, is currently on leave because of the audit exercise, whose interim report has revealed the loss of the over 31 billion. Last year, a petition to the GBCs Management Board by staff of the State broadcasters Accounts Department had alleged that Mr. Agyei had embezzled the money. As a result of the petition, Mr. Agyei had been asked to step aside for independent audit to be carried into his administration. In the interim report, the State Enterprises Audit Corporation reported that release of GH37,495.20 for 2006, GH2,042,573.23 for 2007, GH424,592.58 for 2008 and GH266,472.45 for 2009 cannot be properly accounted for. According to the same report, 2010s GH220,561.27 and 2011s GH162,614.53 can also not be properly accounted for. Added up, these release come to GH3,154,308.26.
