Train Runs Over Man

An unidentified man believed to be in his 30s met his untimely death Thursday when he was run over by a train near the Graphic Road rail line intersection in Accra. The man, who was seen with an earpiece fixed in his ears and ignored warning signals by people around, was knocked down by the train and dragged over a distance of about 38 metres. The incident happened around 11 am as the train was heading towards Kwame Nkrumah Circle. According to eyewitnesses, the man was heading towards the Nkrumah Circle along the rail line when the incident occurred. At the time the Daily Graphic arrived at the accident scene, the mutilated body had been covered with rugs as curious bystanders had gathered in groups discussing the sad incident. The Crossing Assistant at the intersection, Ebenezer Ankomah, said after alerting the vehicles of the approach of the train, he saw the victim walking towards the railway with something in his ears believed to be an earpiece. He said some people were also trying to draw his attention to the approaching train but apparently because he had the earpiece in his ears he could not hear the warnings and by the time he realised the danger, he (victim) had been hit by the train. Another witness who gave his name as Sampson, said he was working when he saw the victim walking without any earpiece as was claimed by others, but looked a little bit drunk from his appearance. He said he even held the back of his neck and pulled him because he realised the train was drawing closer but he refused to obey and went straight ahead towards the road. Sampson said he signalled his colleagues to also alert the victim but all to no avail because he got confused at that point and decided to cross the rail line and that was when the train hit him. Police personnel from the MTTU were at the accident scene to conduct investigations while a police ambulance later conveyed the body to the Police Hospital morgue.
