Ethiopian Airlines became the first African customer for the 777 freighter, placing an order for four of Boeings twin-engine, widebody all-cargo aircraft in a deal worth $1.1 billion at list prices.
As the largest African cargo carrier operating in some of the fastest-growing trade lanes of the world between Africa and Europe, Middle East and Asia the new 777 freighter fleet will significantly enhance our tonnage and range capabilities, said Tewolde Gebremarian, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines.
The proven operational efficiency of these airplanes will reposition Ethiopian Cargo in a stronger place to continue winning in this hypercompetitive market.
The 777 has a maximum range of 5,669 miles and a full payload of 102 metric tons.
Ethiopian Cargo operates five freighters on scheduled and charter services one 757-200, two 747-200s and two MD-11s.
