At least 200 workers of Icecool Ghana Ltd. Based in Tema, have been sent home over the weekend, following a shutdown of the water purification plant.
Information gathered at the port and industrial city indicates that the shutdown is as a result of austerity that has hit the American company.
Icecool Ltd has been operating in the country over the past 15 years.
A highly placed source at the company who confirmed the story to the reporter stated that the workers, who have not been paid their salaries for April and May, this year, were, however, given one month emoluments, leaving arrears of an extra month.
The source intimated that high cost of electricity, water, fuel and rent has necessitated this action.
The only hope of Icecool Ltd. Coming back to the Ghanaian market would be to relocate the plant to a site at Shai Hills, and even that would be determined after two months of feasibility studies.
The company, this reporter can confirm, is refunding payment deposited by customers for supplies.
