Northern Region Director of Education, Alhaji Mahamed Harun is proposing a GHȼ 1.00 tax on beer to fund education in the country.
He argues that beer is a lucrative product to tax due to the high interest and high consumption rate which could be used to support the struggling education sector which government alone has been unable to fund.
According to statistics from Accra Brewery Limited (ABL), 20 trucks of beer are produced daily, while 35,000.000 bottles of beer are consumed daily, confirming the high consumption levels.
It is on the back of these statistics that Alhaji Mahamed is suggesting that the tax be considered on the beer.
He insists that consumers will be more than happy to know that their money is being used to support education and may even drink more, knowing that their money is going for a good cause.
Corporate and Legal Affairs Director of ABL, Adjoba Kyiamah has lauded the proposal but cautions that there is already a special tax on beer.
