Police Visit To Political Parties, A Step In Right Direction!

LAST week the police administration visited the two leading  political parties in the country , the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to acquaint  itself with the activities of the parties and also to  create police-party relationship, all gear towards a peaceful elections in November 7 this year.

GHANA needs peace and that is why we think the approach by the police was something commendable as it will go a long way to reduce the already heightened tension in the country and as well deepen our democracy. In fact we cannot afford to allow politics, and for that matter, elections jeopardize the relative peace we are currently enjoying just because somebody wants to be a parliamentarian or a president.

BUT for how long should both the leadership of the  NPP and the NDC including their supporters  be talked to anytime we are going for an election having  had six successive elections in this country since the inception of the Fourth Republic.  And we at Today think like by now, the two parties should have grown to understand that, elections are not meant for wars  but for peaceful co-existence.

ALTHOUGH we cannot compare ourselves to the well-advanced democracies like the United States of America (USA), Britain, Canada, Germany, France, etcetera, etcetera, we must not  forget the fact that  those countries started like us but with selflessness  and a sense of nationalism and patriotism, they were able to surmount  all the challenges, making them now a toast of other nations, particularly, countries on the Africa continent.

OUR only problem is that, we do not have the interest of the country at heart and we are always thinking about what we can get for ourselves and families. And until our leaders change from their selfish mentality, we will always have problem anytime we are going to the polls to elect leaders to run the affairs of this country.

AND  we on this paper think it is high time we told these two political parties that Ghana does not belong to them and that, they cannot by their parochial interest determine the fate of over twenty-four million people. We want to believe that the police will live by its word so as to ensure  that, not  even a single soul  gets lost . Ghana needs everybody alive and that is  why our security must live above reproach and  not to  compromise on professionalism for  anything.

WHOEVER will breach the electoral process, no matter who that person is, we expect the police to deal with that person without fear or favour. Also we want to see the police playing a neutral role  without showing any bias, as anything short of this can bring the integrity of the elections into disrupt, and thereby marring  the beauty of our democracy.

LET’S all support our growing democracy by ensuring that we have incident free elections come November 7.
