With the mention of the names of some Members of Parliament (MPs), their Constituents are ready to stand up and doff their hats for them, they will defend them to the hilt, but with the mention of the names of others, it is greeted with jeers and boos, one of such MPs is Alhaji Amadu Sorogho, MP for Madina.
Uneasy, they say is the head that wears the crown, so before you criticize me for been harsh on my MP, who I voted for, stop for a moment and ask yourself, especially if you reside in his Constituency, what the man has done.
I cannot be blamed for criticizing somebody I voted into power. Winning an election and in this instance being an MP and being sworn into office as a Legislator means that you have accepted the enormous responsibilities that come with the title. I guess he will chastise and rebuke anybody, who calls him by his name without adding the title ‘Honourable’.
What is more, the Constituents, especially me, entrusted the running and the management of the Constituency to Alhaji Amadu Sorogho, as such, if my MP does not meet the expectations of the constituents, he will definitely receive criticism and I have launched that campaign.
The campaign to get the MP to be alive to his responsibilities is not informed by any malice, hatred or as we are all quick to conclude, I am not doing the bidding of anybody, if am doing any bidding at all, it is first the bidding of the Constituents and secondly that of the party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
I am afraid that with the way things are going, the pent up anger in the people towards the MP, and the fact that the New Patriotic Party (NPP), are going to put forward a formidable candidate, who I know Alhaji Sorogho, should have been aware of, if he is not then am sorry, the NDC is very likely to lose the Seat, should Sorogho be maintained and should the NPP made good their promise of fielding the candidate, whose name is making the rounds.
He is an astute politician, a former MP, a former Minister in the erstwhile John Agyekum Kufuor administration, a Muslim, an affable, perhaps more educated than Sorogho and above all the people’s man. His name resonate very well with the Constituents, anytime you mention his name, even the die-hard members of the NDC, tell you, it is a done deal.
The NDC got to this point, because Alhaji Sorogho, has turned himself into a stranger is his own Constituency, my conclusion is that he has already given up the fight, he is conspicuously missing in the Constituency, he is nowhere to be found.
The government through the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, in collaboration with the various Municipal, Metropolitan and District Assemblies (MMDAs), two weeks ago, organized a clean-up exercise throughout the country, The President, John Dramani Mahama, his deputy, Amissah Arthur, Chiefs, including the Asntehene, Otumfuor Osei Tutu II, Ministers of State, MPs, and ordinary citizens, came out in their numbers to take part in the clean up exercise, which has been instituted to be carried out at the end of every month, dubbed “National Sanitation Day”.
Madina Constituency is one of the densely populated Constituencies and so you have a lot of human and vehicular activities, it has one of the biggest markets in the Greater Accra, so one can imagine the amount of rubbish it generates a day, during the exercise our MP, was conspicuously missing.
This was supposed to be a shared responsibility, with an all hands on deck approach. If our MP, who was supposed to lead this crusade, does not take part in this noble project, what happens to the rest of the people.
Leadership by example, that was why the President, who arrived in the country the previous day, took part in the exercise, he was in the Volta Region, where he joined the Chiefs and people to clean their surroundings.
Alhaji Sorogho, being an MP and a leader in the Constituency, was also suppose to lead the exercise, but as usual and expected of him, he absented himself, not that the people, were not surprised, by his apparent lack of interest it is just that they thought once the President and his Vice, were in the gutters, cleaning and gathering rubbish, Alhaji Sorogho, should have taken a queue from that.
Alahji Amadu Srogho, need to jolt from his slumber, clearly the displeasure of the people, he is attracting is taking the oxygen out of his future ambition, that is if he is still habouring the idea of contesting again.
I am advising him as a son, will do to his father, I am devoting my time to writing all these epistles and messages of caution, because like we all agree, the top is a lonely place to be, all kind of things are thrown at you, which do not reflect what is on the ground, that is why you need voices like ours that will tell you the truth.
He needs to make himself available, the people feel, their concerns are your concerns only when elections are approaching, the mistrust and misgivings are too much. What legacies or projects of significance, are you leaving behind for whoever succeeds you, what concrete achievements can the person point to as the achievements of Alhaji Sorogho, for which reason the NDC, deserve another opportunity in the foreseeable future to represent the Constituency in Parliament.
Since 1992, when we ushered in the new dispensation, Alhaji Amadu Sorogho, has been the longest serving Legislator the Constituency has had, but can his achievements commensurate the number of years he has been in Parliament?
The answer is not farfetched, it is an emphatic No, and you can hardly point to any meaningful achievement of the MP. The Constituency is not one that needs a lot; it just needs certain basic amenities that are dear to the survival of the people. He has to make himself available, he needs to avail himself to his people, they want to see not only during campaign, but when campaigning is over.
Time is of the essence, but I guess better late than never.
