An Accra Circuit Court yesterday jailed one Nana Yaw Adu-Larbi, a teacher, for 17 years for defiling a five-year-old minor.

The accused person, aged 24, was said to have had carnal knowledge of the child at Gbawe, a suburb of Accra, on January 14, 2014.

In court, the judge, Ms Sedina Agbemeva, said the prosecution had been able to make a case against the accused and accordingly handed him the sentence.

The prosecutor, ASP Sarah Acquah, had told the court that the complainant, Andrew Ofori, 46, is a driver and a father to the victim who is a five-year-old Kindergarten pupil.

She said at about 3pm on the aforementioned date, after school had closed for the day, the victim was still in the school waiting for the school bus to pick her home when she felt like urinating.

According to the prosecutor, the victim then went to the washroom at the nursery section to urinate but the suspect followed and took advantage of the victim’s innocence and had sexual intercourse with her.

ASP Acquah indicated that Yaw, after the act, warned the victim not to disclose it to anyone else he (Yaw) will give her some lashes.

She said the victim started bleeding after the act and her pant was soaked with blood, adding that when the victim got home at around 5pm she met her mother’s friend washing some clothes and pleaded with her to wash her pant for her because she was feeling uneasy.

The police officer said the victim took off her pant, whereupon her mother’s friend saw that her pant was soaked with blood.

ASP Acquah added that when the mother of the victim was informed, she examined the victim and saw blood oozing out of her private part.

According to her, the mother then rushed the victim to the Lapaz Community Hospital where the doctor confirmed that the victim had been defiled.

ASP Acquah further disclosed that the victim upon interrogation mentioned Yaw as the culprit and he was subsequently arrested.
