Two Remanded On Robbery Charges

Two persons were on Thursday remanded by an Accra Circuit Court for conspiring to commit crime to wit robbery.

Edem Kelvin Appiah, Driver and Abdul Karim Oman, Shoe Maker, were said to have robbed their victims of US$ 13, 000.00; 4000 Canadian dollars; and GH₡ 900.00, a Bank of Montreal master card and 13 assorted mobile phones.

They both pleaded not guilty to the charges and were remanded to reappear on August 18 2016.

The facts of the case as presented by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Kweku Bempah  was that, the complainants, Otis Peprah, Paul Kwame Peprah both supervisors, whiles Shadrack Agyei is a driver, resides at Weija in Accra, Otis and Paul are Ghanains living in Canada.

He said on May 19, Otis and Paul returned from Canada and their driver Shadrack picked them with his taxi from Kotoka International Airport to their house at Asofan also in Accra.

The prosecution said on reaching the entrance of their house, the driver parked the taxi for them to remove their luggage into the house.

The accused persons together with three others now at large,suddenly arrived at the entrance of the house, armed with a pump action gun, locally made pistols and a dagger  ordered them to surrender their belongings in the taxi.

DSP Bempah said the accused persons with their accomplices conveyed all the bags into a waiting private saloon car.

They searched Otis pocket and took his wallet containing an amount of US$3,000.00; 2,000 Canadian Dollars; and a Bank of Montreal master card and ten assorted mobile phones.

He said the two again searched Paul’s pocket and took US$10,000.00; 2,000 Canadian Dollars, GH₡ 250.00 and his three Blackberry mobile phones, as well as Shadrack’s GH₡ 650.00.

The prosecution said the two and their accomplices matched the complainants into the house and locked them up in the compound and warned them not to come out. They later escaped with their booty, and the complainants later lodged a complainant with the police.

He said whiles investigations were on-going the police had information that, one of the armed robbers called Kingsley Kwasi Yeboah who attacked and robbed the complainants was spotted in a house at Sowutuom.

According to him, the police proceeded to the scene but he esaped.

A search conducted in his room, uncovered the Bank of Montreal master card, two pair of shoes belonging to Otis and Paul, a pump action gun, two locally made pistols, 16 live cartridges, 1dagger and a torchlight concealed in a bag.

DSP Bempah said on July 22, the police had information Otis and Paul who were part of a robbery had been arrested in a stealing case in Kumasi. The police proceeded to Kumasi to transfer the suspects to Accra.

In his caution statement, Edem confessed to the crime and mentioned Abdul Karim, Kingsley, one Kweku Bentum, Bro Panyi and Tijani as his accomplices.

He also said that Kingsley is their gang leader and after the robbery all the items robbed from the complainants were sent to his house at Sowutuom for  it to be shared after which an amount of GHc 100 was given each of them as transport.
