The National President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), Dr. Samuel Asiedu-Addo, has won the 2009 best lecturer in the Sciences award of the University of Education, Winneba.

This follows his outstanding contributions to raise the standard of Mathematics education in the country.

For his award, Dr. Asiedu-Addo who is a Senior Lecturer at the department of Mathematics Education of the University and the Vice-President of the Mathematical Association of Ghana (MAG), received 600 Ghana cedis and a citation.

A citation read at the 14th congregation ceremony in Winneba, said Dr. Asiedu-Addo then a lecturer at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), joined UEW as a part time lecturer in 1992 when the latter was established.

He was among the few pioneers who helped to establish the department of Mathematics education in UEW.

In 1997, he transferred his services from UCC to UEW as a full time lecturer to strengthen the staffing position of the department and was appointed Head of Department (HOD) that very year due to hard work.

In 2001, he had an invitation to the University of Vermont, USA as a Visiting Scholar in conjunction with his PhD. Program at the National Center for Mathematical Sciences.

He returned to Ghana and to his mother University on completion of his PhD. Thesis research in the USA to serve his motherland and was promoted to the rank of a Senior Lecturer in 2006.

Dr. Asiedu-Addo had taught several courses at both undergraduate and post graduate levels.

In his teaching, he does not only want his students to acquire a solid understanding of the various facts and techniques of Mathematics but also to be able to apply it to solve problems related to Mathematical methods, models and techniques.

He integrates research work into his teaching to guide his students to develop interest to investigate scientific phenomena using Mathematics.

The lecturer also believes that looking at a Mathematical problem in as many ways as possible leads to a better understanding hence the use of technology in the classroom forms an integral part of his learning environment.

As part of strategies to motivate students in the learning of Mathematics and to raise the image of the teaching profession, Dr. Asiedu-Addo has suggested for the use of decent attire for lectures in the Universities and institutions of higher learning which his students overwhelmingly embraced since 2005.

His on-going research activities include deposition of aerosol particles in the human respiratory tract and its impact on asthmatics and investigation of ICT in the teaching and learning of Mathematics.

Dr. Asiedu-Addo had authored a number of books for tertiary and second cycle institutions and has published several articles in reputable referred journals.
