Some students from the Mathematics Department of the University of Education, Winneba, have said they were comfortable with wearing a prescribed uniform to lectures and lauded its introduction by a lecturer.

The students said the dignity, uniformity and decency associated with the attire had received commendation from their colleagues in other departments.

This came out when the GNA sampled views from some students on the introduction of the uniform by Dr. Samuel Asiedu-Addo.

A level 200 student, Elvis Kwesi Duah, expressed his profound appreciation to the lecturer because he feels well-dressed and comfortable in the black and white outfit.

He said though it was difficult to adapt initially, they had come to like it.

Dorothy Awuni said the outfit made them feel confident to learn and suggested that the entire student body should be in such outfits.

Emmanuel Kwaku Duah praised the initiative of the lecturer and advocated a simple common dress code for different tertiary institutions.

Dr. Asiedu-Addo said since he introduced the uniform four years ago, he had received positive responses from some students, some of whom have adopted it in their schools.

He said the rationale behind the attire was to remove the stigma associated with the teaching profession and to restore the lost glory of teachers in society.

Dr. Asiedu-Addo said "a well-dressed person may not do something which is degrading to his status like throwing a peel of banana on the street."

He said proper dressing ensured that students were disciplined and were focused and this contributed to smooth academic work.

Dr. Asiedu-Addo said it was the responsibility of the teacher to dress well and feel at home in a bid to earn respect from society like other professionals.

"The crusade is not to force students to wear prescribed attire to lectures but to ensure that teachers are important in society and must be disciplined as such," he said
