Severe congestion resulting from inadequate classroom space has forced about 150 fresh students of the Saint Louis Senior High School (SHS) in Kumasi to study under trees.

Others have also been using the school’s uncompleted assembly hall as makeshift classroom.

An official of the all-girls SHS, who asked not to be identified told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the situation was quite disturbing.

He said apart from the lack of classrooms, there was also the difficulty of providing sleeping and residential accommodation for the students.

This, had led to the situation where the science laboratory and ironing shed had been converted into temporary dormitory – housing about half of the newly admitted student population.

Again the school’s dining hall built five decades ago for just 16 students is now being used by more than 2,200 students.

The official said until a 12-unit classroom building and a dormitory block started by the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) were completed, the problem would persist.

Meanwhile, a dormitory block project, being financed by the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GET-Fund) remains uncompleted after eight years of construction.

He appealed to the contractors to speed up work on the projects to bring some relief to the students and their teachers.
