Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, Minister of Education, has toured some examination centres in Accra to acquaint herself with the level of preparation by examination officials and candidates.

This year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) has begun with a total of 274,255 candidates sitting for the examination.

The candidates comprising 141, 524 males and 132,731 females are expected to write the examination at 667 centres in 897 schools throughout the country.

The Minister visited Presbyterian Senior High Legon, Accra Girls Senior High and West Africa Senior High Schools.

Addressing the media after the tour, the Minister expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the examination so far.

She said last year’s examination malpractice concerns was a big blow to WAEC and the Ministry and appealed to parents, students and WAEC to avoid such malpractices.

She appealed to the candidates to abide by the rules and regulations of the examination saying “we will not be lenient with anyone who violates the law, all must abide by rules”.

The Minister also called on parents to pay the school fees of their wards at the beginning of the term and not to wait till their results are out.

She called on school authorities to desist from charging two terms' fees, saying it is illegal for them to embark on such activities.

She also advised that no student should be termed as a failure because failing an examination does not mean such candidate cannot make it.

"It is thus important we collectively raise citizenry that are confident and know that they can make mistakes and still learn from it," she said.

Lady Queen Asiedu Akrofi, Headmistress of Presbyterian Senior High, Legon, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency said no candidate has absented himself since the exams started.
