Former President Jerry John Rawlings has declined a proposal to have the University of Development Studies (UDS) named after him.
He says he has previously declined such offers and will certainly not accept this one because he has a long standing principle not to have any national monument and facility named after him.
In a statement from his Communication Directorate and signed by Kobina Andoh Amoakwa, he explained that 'When the proposal for the naming of the UDS was first brought to the former President’s attention by the Education Minister in 2017, he thanked the President and the government for the honour, but politely declined the offer because he had a long-standing principle not to have national monuments and facilities named after him.'
"Indeed in November 2015 when the then government of the day offered to name the Offshore Cape Three Points Floating, Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel after him he turned down the offer as well".
The former President has since the publication of the details of the new bill to be tabled to Parliament written to the Minister of Education to reiterate his position and kindly requested that the re-naming of UDS after him be withdrawn from the Draft Bill to be submitted to Parliament.
He however, has expressed his appreciation to the President and his government for recognizing his contribution to the development of education in the country.

RE: UDS TO BE NAMED AFTER RAWLINGS
Former President Jerry John Rawlings has taken note of publications in the media on a proposed Universities Bill to be submitted to Parliament.
The former President has taken particular note of the plan to re-name four universities after eminent Ghanaian personalities, including the naming of the University of Development Studies (UDS) after him.
When the proposal for the naming of the UDS was first brought to the former President’s attention by the Education Minister in 2017, he thanked the President and the government for the honour, but politely declined the offer because he had a long-standing principle not to have national monuments and facilities named after him.
Indeed in November 2015 when the then government of the day offered to name the Offshore Cape Three Points Floating, Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel after him he turned down the offer as well.
The former President has since the publication of the details of the new bill to be tabled to Parliament written to the Minister of Education to reiterate his position and kindly requested that the re-naming of UDS after him be withdrawn from the Draft Bill to be submitted to Parliament.
The former President once again thanks the President and all those who in diverse ways are keen on recognizing his contribution to the development of Education in the country.

Ultemate-cafe, the name was "Makola"
Who can remember us the former name of Rawlings Park? in the early 80's
IN AFRICA WE HONOR HYENAS INSTEAD OF LAMBS HENCE OUR PREDICAMENT. RAWLINGS REJECTED IT BECAUSE HE RIGHTLY KNOWS THAT HE DOESN'T DESERVE IT ANYWAY. RAWLINGS PARK,RAWLINGS CIRCLE,RAWLINGS CHAINS AND ANYTHING HE CAME TO DESTROY SHOULD BE NAMED AFTER HIM TO REMIND US NOT TO FOLLOW ANY RIFFRAFF WHO COMES AS A FAKE MESSIAH ONLY TO SEEK TO ENRICH HIMSELF.THE SUPREME COURT SHOULD BE NAMED AFTER RAWLINGS TO REMIND US ABOUT THE INNOCENT JUDGES HE AND HIS ASSOCIATES MURDERED IN COLD BLOOD.ONLY TIME WILL TELL.
...these comments are not necessary and in fact waste of time; the guy said no to a request, take it or leave it...comment on what will bring relief to the people...the references do not make sense and if he doesn't want it, someone else will....
DOES RAWLINGS DESERVE THAT HONOR IN THE FIRST PLACE? SHALL WE AS A DEMOCRATIC NATION HONOR COUP MAKERS? AND WHY IS KOTOKA STILL BEARING THE NAME OF OPUR NATIONAL/INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT? ARE WE A NATION OF JOKERS?
Yes, he says he does not want to be named after anything so be it. we should accord him that respect and the right. I respect him for that because he had the opportunity to promote himself to any rank in the military but he never did. he is still the Flt & Lft. what about that? the names of Rawlings park and rest been named after him by people were event orchestrated and he has not publicly denied nor accepted so give him the benefit of doubt. Yes because at school we are all been given all sort of names. accept or refuse still you would be called by it. so why hate him. pls respect him for that and don't draw Rawlings into that political bastardisation. stay blessed.
SALT, what difference does it make? Power they say belongs to the people. The government and the people who is powerful? Even those that were ceremonially commissioned are being changed. His excellency should have rejected Rawlings park in principle.
Please the places you mentioned were not formally named After the former president. People just named those places after Rawlings and they remained so. There was no formal declaration, ceremonies to commission those names
Please add RAWLINGS CHAIN.
hmmmmmmm................RAWLINGS PARK, accra RAWLINGS CIRCLE, madina........... what is the difference?
