As part of preparations to re-open tertiary institutions in the Upper East Region, Zoomlion Ghana, over the weekend started fumigating and disinfecting all campuses, administration blocks, lecture halls and hostels in various schools.

The campuses include the University for Development Studies, Bolgatanga Technical University, Gbewaa Training College in Pusiga and St. John Bosco Training College in Navrongo in the Kassena Nankana Municipality.

Mr Kojo Upon, the Public Jobs Manager, Zoomlion, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Sumbrungu in the Bolgatanga Municipality, said more than 60 personnel of Zoomlion were involved in the fumigation exercise.

He said the fumigation would rid the campuses of pests and rodents and the schools would be ready for use in 24 hours.

Speaking on challenges faced during the spraying exercise, Mr Upon said the schools were engulfed in so much dirt since they had been closed for a long time and the working teams had more on their hands than a spraying exercise.

Professor Samuel Erasmus Alnaa, the Acting Rector of the Bolgatanga Technical University, in an interview to ascertain the school’s readiness for reopening on June 15, as directed by President Nana Addo Danquah Akufo Addo, said a team is in place to plan for the arrival of students and for lectures to begin.

He said the school has made available some Veronica buckets with water and liquid soap at all lecture halls adding that other ‘large- spaced’ departments would be made available for lectures.

He said lectures would begin as agreed on Monday, stressing that government has supported the institution with PPE for the staff.

The Rector said a COVID- 19 team was ready to monitor on daily basis, the temperature of students and ensure that all the protocols were observed.

“We are lucky our school population is not large and for that matter the class size will be manageable, we have a sick bay and a vehicle in place for any emergencies”, he said.

He advised the students to strictly observe the COVID-19 protocols and limit their movements out of campus, “We are not in normal times, those staying out of campus should endeavour to stay home and be safe”.

Meanwhile, similar exercises have taken place in 51 public and private senior high schools in the region.
