Twenty-six students have died after a bus they were on plunged into a river in the northern Indian state of Rajasthan, police say. Some 34 were injured when the bus, returning to Sawai Madhopur district from the holy city of Vrindavan, fell into the Morel river.
The dead included 11 girl students of a local college. Road accidents claim hundreds of lives every year in India. Most are blamed on reckless driving and ageing vehicles.
The police said the bus smashed through a barrier as it was crossing a bridge and dived into the river.
