Madam Docea Okyere, 82, of Darkuman Circle Station, Official Town in Accra, suffered a great ordeal last Thursday, August 27, 2009 when they tried to resuscitate their mother by moving from one hospital to another in search of a bed for her to lie on.

Slapped in the face with ‘No Bed’, the children combed throughout hospitals in Accra for over four hours, only to come by none just to witness the untimely demise of the old lady.

Narrating the ordeal to the Torch newspaper, Mr Owusu Ansah of the Public Affairs Directorate of Parliament House stated that the old lady, who had been taken ill for sometime now was recovering encouragingly, until she was suddenly taken ill on August 27, around 8.30pm.

He noted that the children, not feeling comfortable with this development hurriedly swung into action to have her resuscitated by rushing her to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital from her Darkuman residence.

Mr Owusu Ansah told newsmen that on reaching the hospital, they were asked to go for referral from the Korle-Bu Poly-Clinic. According to him, they decided to have her admitted at the Poly-clinic, only to learn that there was no bed for her. Subsequently, they decided to send her back to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital but there too, the story was no different, “No Bed”.

They then sent her to the Ridge, 37 Military and Police Hospitals, where the same story was told them, “No Bed”. Finally, they sent her to the SSNIT Hospital, after moving from one hospital to the other for four hours. He pointed out that at SSNIT, they were charged GH¢400.00 (Four Million Cedis), which they agreed to pay.

However, before they could remove her from the taxi carrying her to the hospital, she gave up the ghost around 12.15am on Friday. Mr Owusu Ansah was of the opinion that if the old lady had been attended to early enough, the story would have been different.
