The Inspector General of Police (IGP) has interdicted Deputy Superintendent of Police, Adjei Nimo, who has been accused of attacking some medical officers and two security guards at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) last week.

The Police administration is however waiting for the outcome of an investigation from the Police Intelligence and Professional Standards (PIPS) unit to determine a line of action against five police officers who collaborated with DSP Nimo to attack the hospital’s staff.

The five are Detective Corporal Kennedy Owusu, Lance Corporal James Addy, Detective Corporal Kennedy Yeboah, General Constable Samuel Adu and Lance Corporal Jacob Namlor.Ashanti Regional Police Commander Patrick Timbillah told Graphic that Adjei Nimo was interdicted last Tuesday to pave way for effective investigations to be carried out.

He said information available indicated that Chief Superintendent Okyere Darko, in charge of the PIPS in Ashanti who is investigating the case would soon finish and send a report to the IGP.

He urged the public, especially those who witnessed the incident and are yet to provide evidence of the attack to visit the man in charge of the investigation to provide such evidence.

This, he said would enrich the report to enable the IGP take the necessary action. “We would not like to condone any act of unprofessionalism on the part of the police officer and those who created the confusion at the hospital” he noted.

On why the IGP did not interdict the five other policemen, Mr Timbillah said “they acted on instruction from a senior police officer”. He explained it was only when the report proved that they acted unprofessionally and that what they did was not justified that they would be punished.

Last week DSP Adjei Nimo and five police men were said to have attacked a section of medical officers on duty at the Accident and Emergency centre of Komfo Anokye Hospital.

They also allegedly attacked a security guard identified as Eric Kankam who was on duty at the hospital gate and left him with bruises.
Their action was said to have created a state of pandemonium at the hospital, causing the medical officers to abandon their patients who were receiving emergency medical care.

In the process, a 38-year old woman, receiving medical care at the Accident and Emergency Unit of the hospital allegedly died moments afterwards. The Management of KATH petitioned the IGP to expedite action on the matter.

Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Ashanti, Patrick Timbillah explained that the police officers were responding to an earlier altercation with a security man at the hospital’s gate who prevented DSP Nimo from entering the hospital with his vehicle.

Some members of the public condemned the policeman’s action and said if even there had been an earlier wrong, the response from the police officer was not proper.
