Professor Edmund Delle, President of the African Commission of Health and Human Rights Promoters, has expressed concern about the shortage of dermatologists and allied professionals on the African continent.
He noted that there are fewer than 300 dermatologists in Africa - a figure he said is woefully inadequate and should radically improve through deliberate efforts.
Prof Delle, who is also the Founder of Rabito clinic, said the skin is the largest organ of the human body and that its relevance in medical care, particularly in the diagnoses of diseases in general, must never be underestimated.
He was speaking at the 40th anniversary celebration of the Clinic held in Kumasi.
He called for the training of more dermatologists and allied health professionals, building of skin specialist hospitals and provision of sufficient laboratory equipment for efficient healthcare delivery.
Rabito clinic has been providing services in general medicine with specialty in dermatology - diseases of the skin, hair and nail. It is one of the leading hospitals in the sub-region at the forefront of dermatological care.
“Prurigo, alopecia, urticaria, pruritus, papular urticaria, dermatophytosis, acne, eczema” are among the wide range of diseases, it is adept in treating.
Prof Delle announced that the clinic’s newly-inaugurated Ahodwo-Daban branch would in the coming weeks embark on a free health-screening and blood donation exercises as part of its corporate social responsibility.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, in a speech read on his behalf underscored the need for the nation to put premium on specialist healthcare services.
This, he said is necessary to give people afflicted with peculiar diseases access to quality care at the facilities.
He commended the founders of the clinic for their vision and dedicated services to the people.
He urged the staff to continue to work hard to bring relief to those suffering from diseases.
