The Veterinary Medical Technicians Association of Ghana (VEMTAG), has announced a nationwide strike action by its members over non-payment of interim market premium.

President of the Ghana Veterinary Medical Technicians Association, Mr. Emmanuel Eshun says members of his outfit are embarking on a nationwide strike to probe justice into their Single Spine Salary as promised by government.

He explained Veterinary Power Professional as persons who handle birds and animal laboratory, and veterinary clinics across the country.

It also includes persons who work at the various borders and airports veterinary centers inspecting the country’s milk, animals and birds to show they are quality health wise for human consumption both within and outside the country.

According to him, they are not happy leaving their jobs to be at home but they must also fight for their right since government has refused to adhere to their petition since last year.

All we want is to sit with the President and redress with him our problems, because he has given the surgeon doctors their required salary per the Single Spine payment, but have refused to do same for our outfit even though we are part of the policy spine.

"The irony is that, the veterinary surgeons have been deservingly enjoying market premium, excluding the para professionals who play complementary role and face the same risks since the para professional is the first point of contact in most disease outbreaks."

He indicated that the Labour Commission should also play their part per this account because we have served them a letter since 12th January of this year and have not heard from them till date.

The strike action would affect veterinary services at airports, harbours, borders, quarantine stations, laboratories, clinics, slaughter houses, slaughter slabs, vaccine production units and abattoirs.

Veterinary Surgeons have now taken over the position of the Veterinary Power Professionals across the country.
