Ghana’s Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), has hosted leading global experts on vaccine safety to conclude the development of a Universal Guide for Vaccines Safety.

The Council for International Organizations of Medical Sciences under the World Health Organization (CIOMS/WHO), a working Group on Vaccine Safety, was established in 2013 to provide a forum for Information exchange and interaction between Public Health Agencies, Regulatory Authorities, Industry and other stakeholders on vaccine safety.

A press release signed by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the FDA, Hudu Mogtari, said the programme was held at the Fiesta Royale Hotel in Accra.

It explained that, the group “decided to host its last meeting in Ghana in view of the important role the country is playing in global vaccine safety”.

The acting Deputy Chief Executive in charge of Safety Monitoring and Clinical Trials, Mrs. Delese Darko, represented Ghana on the Council.

The statement said, “she represents not just the interest of Ghana but that of African and low and middle income regulators in shaping the global
landscape for vaccine safety”.

Addressing the 8th meeting of the Council, Hudu Mogtari, expressed his pleasure at hosting the Working Group (WG) in Ghana, as it happened to be the first time the Working Group meeting was organized outside the United States and Europe.

The Meeting aims to come out with a Global Best Practice Guide on Vaccine Safety for use by all countries.

“The aim of the Ghana meeting is therefore to discuss the final draft with a view to providing guidance to all countries in the world since a unified standard is essential to ensure that all recipients in all countries receive vaccines which have been subject to the same standards of quality, effectiveness and safety”, he said.

Present at the meeting are the Vaccine Safety Experts from the USA, European Union, WHO – Switzerland and the leading Vaccine manufacturers from both Developed and Developing Countries.
