The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) which comprises all public sector nurses, midwives, Physician Assistants (PAs) and Anesthetists (CRAs) today embarked on strike.
The GRNMA is demanding better conditions of services from the Government.
Despite an interim injunction secured by the National Labour Commission (NLC) to restrain members of the association from laying down their tools, the nurses say their strike is in full force.
David Tenkorang Twum, the General Secretary of the Association speaking in an interview with Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peace FM morning show 'Kokrokoo', condemned government's 'belligerent' posture insisting it will not help in resolving the issue.
"We’ve realized they don’t take us serious during negotiations…we told them the belligerent posture they’ve adopted won't help but they didn’t pay attention to us. We wrote a letter to them giving them a two-week ultimatum but they didn’t listen. This shows we are not respected and so we advised ourselves" he indicated.
According to him, until they receive “a signed sealed condition of service for nurses and midwives” they are not calling off their strike.
Meanwhile, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) had asked the nurses to back down on its intended strike and return to the negotiation table to have its grievances resolved.
