The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has assured Ghanaians of the potency of the COVID-19 vaccines.
The Association, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, said the vaccines had helped in reducing severe illness and death and encouraged the citizenry to go for the jabs.
The assurance follows concerns by the Concerned Ghanaian Doctors about the efficacy of the vaccines with calls on the Government to halt the nationwide vaccine rollout.
The Doctors claimed the risks associated with the COVID-19 vaccines far outweighed the potential benefits with alleged increase in the death toll after the introduction of the vaccines.
However, Dr Frank Serebour, the President of GMA, said there was no data to support claims that the risks of the vaccines outweighed the potential benefits because some countries had reduced their death rate with the introduction of the vaccines.
He noted that countries like Italy, US, UK, and others, which were recording high deaths, had their situation brought under control with the introduction of the vaccines.
Dr Serebour said available data and science, therefore, did not support the claim.
He said COVID-19 was still an emerging disease and that Science was still evolving, saying, “as a new disease that keeps evolving, definitely interventions would change”.
He said the fact that people got infected even after being vaccinated did not mean the vaccines were not good.
“As doctors, we should be a little hesitant when speaking against vaccines if not it would go beyond COVID vaccines towards polio, measles among others, which will not help,” Dr Serebour cautioned.
He encouraged Ghanaians to ensure that they got vaccinated for the country to achieve herd immunity to break the chain of transmission and prevent deaths.

These are the very doctors who will not attend to patients because they have covid-19 and their excuse will be they don't have protective clothing to use. So what should people use to protect themselves? Eeeh!!! This is what Akrobeto called the problem of the day who can solve? How can anybody solve this problem of the country with these characters parading as professional but have no professionalism in them. Akrobeto come for your stone!!! People who will listen to such people does so at their own peril
There is an iota of truth in what these concerned doctors are saying.. Plssss blacks we must wake up from our slumber. If it's from the whiteman then we loose our sense of thinking so to speak and accept it "wholesale" Have we asked ourselves this simple question, we are we not dying like the whites? Mosquitoes are killing people for all these years., last year over 2,600 people lost their lives through accident..... Arise and shine Africa!
hm GMA, The team of doctors were specific. They mentioned countries which had high vaccination rates still recording increased hospitalizations and death. Do u dispute that? Challenge them on de fact of their case. What amount if study has been done on de Ghana situation of COVID. How come GMA has no published paper on how come many do not follow protocols, we sit in air-condition buses for 12 hours plus daily we gather for events all de time and yet look at our numbers. De GMA doesn't care all you care is there is vaccine, white people have done it so we too let's go for it whether we need it or not. Ei asem oo

For these concerned doctors to draw this conclusion with their data is not only dangerous, but unacademic and unethical. What is the source of their data and its credibility? Serious medical researchers always subject their data and findings to peer-review and scrutiny before publication in relevant medical journal. These "concerned doctors" failed to do this basic thing in medical research but run to tabloid newspapers to publish it causing fear. How can this be? I am not happy at all with such abuse of expert power. Medical doctors cannot behave like speculators gambling their way to the cashier's desk. We don't teach this in classrooms. GMA must investigate them and give them appropriate sanctions, if found culpable. At minimum, they must withdraw what they put into public domain and render apology for not subjecting their work to anonymity scrutiny by other medical experts before publicizing it.
It is mind boggling to hear educated, ethical Doctors talking like this. Why do they follow conspiracy theories just like some educated illiterates.
