The Tema Community Two Police have arrested four persons who allegedly tried snatching a taxi from its driver in Tema yesterday. The suspects were named as Alhassan Haruna, 30 years, a CD/DVD dealer, Yussif Sule, 23 years, a used clothes dealer, Sule Issah, 22 years, home-used appliances seller and Amadu Musah, 34 years, a fabrics seller.

Briefing the media on the alleged car snatching incident, Superintendent of Police Mr. Gabriel Amankwah Dokyi, the Tema Community Two Police Commander, remarked that the driver of the Kia taxi with registration number GR 6966-09, Richard Acheampong, told police after his rescue that he was hired by a White lady from an area around Osu in Accra to Casino in Tema.

Because Acheampong usually plied his trade in Accra, he was not familiar with the Tema route. So on arrival in Tema with the White lady, he sought the assistance of a female resident of the area who told him that she was also going towards their direction.

Supt Dokyi continued that when they arrived, their helper got down and left. He said after awhile, some men believed to be operators of a black market came over to the car and asked if the White lady wanted to change some currencies, to which she explained that she would like to change some money but the money was in Accra. The men then agreed to go with her to Osu to change the money.

The men, who were waiting in the taxi while the White lady left to buy a few things in a nearby shop, became offended when she failed to turn up in time.

“The guys, without any provocation, started beating me and shouting on top of their voices that I was a thief who had condoned with the lady to dupe them of their monies, threatening to teach me a lesson,” Acheampong narrated.

He narrated further that after one of the men made a call on his cell phone, a private car with four occupants arrived and another man on a motorbike, and they all joined in beating him. He continued that they put him in the back seat of his taxi and drove to a suburb of Tema he wasn’t familiar with.

“At the bush, they continued beating and told me that they were waiting for darkness to come so that they would kill me and take away my taxi,” the cabbie related.

He stated that realizing his life was in danger, he managed to run away from them to the roadside where he tried to get help from other motorists. It was there that he saw a police jeep which, according to the Station Commander, was earlier dispatched to the scene after an informant had reported the alleged attack on Acheampong to his office. Supt. Dokyi noted that four of the men were arrested while the matter was being investigated.
