Mr James Agyenim-Boateng, a Deputy Minister of Information, on Thursday urged the new Board of the Ghana Publishing Company Limited (GPCL) to lobby for government printing jobs to turn around the dwindling fortunes of the company.

He said the publishing business was now highly competitive and as such the GPCL must position itself well to be able to compete favourably with the private publishing firms.

Mr Agyenim-Boateng was speaking at the inauguration of the Board of Directors of the Ghana Publishing Company Limited in Accra.

The company, which is fully owned by the state, has Mr Ransford Akai, Aviation and Road Transport Consultant and a Lecturer at GIMPA, as its Chairman.

The Board members include Mr A.B.A. Fuseini, Daily Graphic, Mr Raymond Harry Reynolds, New Times Corporation and Mr Stanislav Xoese Dogbe, Weekly Express.

The rest are Mr Raymond Tawiah, Member of Parliament for Yilo Krobo, Mr Paa Kwesi Brew-Yartey, Ms Diana Herman Adu, The Very Reverend Helena Opoku-Sarkodie and David K. Dzreke, Acting Managing Director of GPCL.

Mr Agyenim-Boateng said despite the excellent staff that the company had, its current financial position coupled with its obsolete equipment was not something to write home about.

He urged members of the new board to put aside all other interests and help rebuild the company.

"I know the calibre of the Board members. They are experienced and tested and would bring these to bear on the company," he added.

Mr Akai called for new work ethics among management and staff to help revamp the Company.

He said the management of the Company must ensure that those owing the Company paid back their debts.

Mr Akai also reiterated the call for the Company to lobby government for printing jobs adding that printing works from the Ministry of Education alone were enough to feed the GPCL with jobs.

"We have to create wealth so that we can all share; we cannot share what we have not created."
