The mayor of Accra has rejected claims he is failing to realize the dream of transforming the capital city into a millennium city as promised by government.

Mr. Alfred Vanderpuije says much progress has been made to make Accra a place of envy. Although he concedes more had to be done to address the situation, he disclosed that the Metropolis is far better off than it was three years ago.

Issues of sanitation, vehicular congestion and the presence of hawkers on the streets of Accra have been the Mayor’s main challenges but he says there has been “massive improvement” that deserves commendation.

“The Millennium City is being built everyday. Things are getting better. Let’s look at the graph. Where were we three years ago and where are we today?”

“I am not saying for a minute that we have achieved everything, but all I am trying to say is that, under the watch of Prof. Evans Attah Mills, the city of Accra today is better than what we had three years ago.”

He said the government is still working to raise the standards of the city despite the challenges encountered so far.

He said the school structures that existed before President Mills came to power were the same structures that they used when they were students.

Mr. Vanderpuije however assured that government is still tackling the thorny issues associated with the slums in the capital.
