The main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has condemned attacks on the Deputy Minister of Women and Children’s Affairs, Hajia Gariba Boya.

Hajia Boya was allegedly attacked by Mma Kande, who is a National Democratic Congress (NDC) member, on Sunday evening in Tamale when the Deputy Minister went to the salon to fix her hair in preparation for the arrival of President John Mahama on Monday.

Madam Kande reportedly pounced on the Deputy Minister, pushed her down and tore her clothes. The hairdresser for Hajia Gariba Boya who is five months pregnant was also pushed down during the incident.

While condemning the attack, the National Women’s Organiser of the NPP, Otiko Djaba, said: “The National Democratic Congress has demonstrated clearly that all is not well within their party…

“We call on Ghanaians to speak out against this culture of violence and in particular, on women’s groups to speak out against this alleged violence.”

Below is the full statement:

We have learnt with outmost disgust allegations of assault on the Deputy Minister of Women and Children’s Affairs, Hajia Gariba Boya.

Hajia Gariba Boya has accused the Minister for Communication, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, of masterminding attacks on her in Tamale last weekend, and also claimed that Mr. John Jinapor, the
Spokesperson for President John Dramani Mahama on the 16th of May this year, slapped her. An incident, according to her, she reported to President John Mahama, who was then Vice President, but no action has since been taken.

The NDC continues to show and engage in violence from the highest level of government (Presidency) to the lowest level and also at the party level.

Since 2009, when the NDC assumed administration of the country, the violence that has engulfed the nation has been gargantuan. From the seizure of toilets, bridges, NHIS offices, DCE offices, toll booths, chasing and threatening Ministers with death. Even the National Headquarters of the party was taken hostage by some party supporters at a point.

The National Democratic Congress has demonstrated clearly that all is not well within their party. At every opportunity the NDC also seems to enjoy attacking Ghanaians who don’t agree with its policies or want to pursue peaceful democratic values, which are a right for every Ghanaian. The party‘s sadistic attitude towards women is a real threat to peace and stability in the country.

The allegations made by the Deputy Minister for Women and Children Affairs suggests that President John Mahama is also uncaring as far as women rights are concerned.

We call on Ghanaians to speak out against this culture of violence and in particular, on women’s groups to speak out against this alleged violence against the Deputy Minister, Hajia Gariba Boya.

We also wish to call on President John Dramani Mahama to investigate these allegations thoroughly to establish the facts of the case.

Signed

Otiko Djaba
National Women’s Organiser
