A group calling itself 'Friends of Dr Ato Quarshie' has said though the incumbent Member of Parliament, Dr J.S. Annan, has won the National Democratic Congress primaries, he will certainly lose the election if he is allowed to stand on the party’s ticket in the December elections.
They have therefore insisted that Dr Quarshie respond to their calls for him to contest the December parliamentary election.
The group which insisted that the NDC Member of Parliament had lost popularity with the electorate, said they would decide on the next line of action depending on the response of Dr Ato Quarshie.
At a news conference held at Elmina, attended by polling station executive and some members of the group's spokesperson, Mr Bentum Asankomah, said 'we believe that our parliamentary candidate, Dr J.S. Annan, even though constitutionally elected at the primaries cannot win the coming election.
He said Dr Annan had poor interpersonal skills, and this he noted had caused him to lose popularity with the grassroots.
Mr Asankomah alleged that when Dr Annan at one point was asked at Abayee that he should help the community to get their road rehabilitated, he was said to have replied 'Did you see me carrying a grader that would enable me to maintain the road for you. At Kwesi Edum, he was alleged to have told a meeting of the people that they should find soap, sponge and water to wash a school block that needed painting.”
Mr Asankomah said these, among other several instances, had shown how Dr Annan had spoken cheekily to the people.
We have therefore come together and resolved strongly to present the peoples candidate to the electorate.
'We are prepared to sponsor Dr Quarshie's campaign with all our might. The NDC in the KEEA is ours, and we will not sit down for one person to destroy it. We are therefore giving Dr Ato Quarshie three days to respond to our demand.'
He said with Dr Annan's attitude, the group believed it had to take its own destiny into its hands if the party was to retain the seat in the constituency.
Mr Kwesi Thompson said the group acknowledged all structures in the party, but indicated that the people who would vote were in the KEEA Constituency.
He indicated that the delegates who chose Dr J.S. Annan could not guarantee victory for Dr Annan in the constituency, adding that over 70,000 people would determine who won the election.
He said the group would support Dr Quarshie to ensure that he won massively in the constituency.
