The Prestea Underground Mine which is the nerve of the People and a major source of livelihood is to be re-opened before the end of the year.

The Mine has been lying dormant for some time due to the lack of resources.

President Mahama who gave the assurance to the People of Prestea in the Huni Valley District of the Western Region said a mobile road maintenance unit has been dispatched to start work on the Prestea and other adjoining roads which are in a deplorable state.

Prestea is known as the Gold town because it abounds in the valuable natural resource Gold.

Until recently the town has come under adverse attack from ‘galamsey’ mainly by foreigners.

Another major worry is the Prestea Underground Mine which has become defunct due to the activities of both local and foreign ‘galamsey’ operators.

To this end, the economic fortunes of the Prestea town and it environs is inextricably linked to the reopening of the underground mine.

The re-activation of the underground mine was at the heart of late President Mills and he had begun steps towards it before he passed on.

President Mahama later addressed students of the university of Mines and technology, residents of Nsuaem and Wassa Manso selling the "advancing the better Ghana agenda" and the NDC's record of promising and delivering.
