President of the Greater Accra Market Women Association, Mercy Nee Djan has appealed to the Electricity Company of Ghana to supply market women with metres to ease the pressures at the marketplaces.
She ascribed some illegal electrical connections at the marketplaces to the inadequacy of metres in the markets and partly blamed the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) for its inabilty to provide metres to traders in the metropolis.
She therefore called the immediate attention of ECG to the plight of the traders.
ECG, Madam Nee Djan in an interview with Radio Gold, stated is not ready to supply immediate metres to the people in the market and as market people, they have to eat. So, all that we are saying is we are pleading with ECG; they should make available to solve that illegal problem
Expounding further, she said that though a lot of fire outbreaks in the country including the recent incident at the Katamanto market have been attributed to illegal connections in various markets, the traders should be educated on the causes of the fire outbreaks to prevent furture occurences of the incident.
She explained the Associations objective for market women, saying we ourselves have to educate our people so that they will know what is right for them. We have to at least sit down and make some regulations and rules to bind whatever is happening.
