Hundreds of workers have demonstrated against the management of Swedish Machineries and Trucks (SMT) (Volvo House) a private foreign Company over its decisions to lay off workers without tangible reasons.

Swedish Machineries and Trucks (SMT) formerly called Multi-Teach Services deals in Volvo equipments; their head office is located on the Graphic road (Accra) and has some of its branches in Tarkwa, Kumasi and some parts of West Africa namely: Nigeria, Cote D’ivoire, Mali, Benin and also Cameroon respectively.

The agitating workers claim they were not informed of the decision-taking by the management of SMT, therefore, they (workers) urged the various authorities especially Ghana Trade Union Congress (TUC) to render service of help for the workers of Swedish Machineries and Trucks (Volvo House).

Mr. Paul Kwaku Atackyi a worker told The Publisher reporter that, “what is going on in SMT is very bad because, the management will just give you a letter of dismissal and ask you to go home without saying anything to you. Meanwhile, we’ve not done anything wrong to them”.

According to Mr. Atackyi, the workers of Swedish Machineries and Trucks decided one day to join a union that would have been the mouth piece for the voiceless in SMT, but later the idea of joining the union turned into a new leaf as those who were having their names on the union list were sacked without any reason whatsoever by the management of SMT.

However, those who were not part of the idea of joining the union are still working without any disturbances from management.

Mr. David, Isaac Kofi Buabeng and Francis all in their uniforms with red bands on their legs, hands and heads are pleading with the management of SMT to explain to them (workers) what they have done wrong and if guilty, they are ready to apologize to management of SMT because they can’t afford to lose their jobs since they are the bread winners of their various families.

The management of Swedish Machineries and Trucks refused to talk to the media on the above issue.
