The Ashanti Regional Police Command has declared Asamoah Gyan's elder brother, Baffour Gyan wanted.
"You cannot take the law into your own hands....If you believe someone has offended or slighted you, you remedy that by the law. Tell Baffour Gyan that he, out of his own volition, better report to the Ashanti Regional Police Headquarters otherwise the police will arrest him wherever he is located," DCOP Kofi Boakye told Peacefmonline's Kwadwo Asante in an interview.
Baffour Gyan is said to have led some machomen to assault state-owned Daily Graphics Ashanti Regional Editor, Mr Daniel Kenu.
He allegedly launched the first attack against the reporter before the machomen joined.
A day prior to this unfortunate incident, two 20-year-olds students of the Koforidua Polytechnic, taunted Asamoah Gyan over musician Castros disappearance at the Black Stars training session.
Isaac Owusu and Bright Nistowel, the two students, allegedly started shouting Asamoah Gyan where is Castro at the UAE-based attacker as the Black Stars arrived for training on Wednesday morning.
Castro and a lady friend, Janet Badu, disappeared while surfing the Ada estuary waves on a jet ski. They have not been found since the accident. Some have accused Asamoah Gyan of sacrificing his friend for spiritual purposes while the two went on holidays at Ada in June.
The police subsequently arrested the two students, who were later cautioned and released
Thus, Mr Kenu decided to use Wednesdays press conference to urge Asamoah Gyan to seize the opportunity to tell Ghanaians his side of the story to put the matter to rest and also correct any such erroneous impression.
But the question was deemed unnecessary since the Black Stars had a high stakes AFCON 2015 qualifier to focus attention on.
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kwesi Nyantakyi, further urged the player not to answer the question because the allegations were purely metaphysical and, therefore, could not be proven.
However, some loyal friends of the Black Stars skipper appeared clearly riled by the journalist's question.
According to reports monitored on Hello FM, a sister station of Peace FM based in Kumasi, Kenu had gone to the Baba Yara stadium on Friday to pick his accreditation for the Ghana-Uganda AFCON qualifiers game scheduled for Saturday, when Asamoah Gyans brother and the machomen accosted him without provocation.
Following the pummeling he received, the journalist had to seek medical treatment at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi after he had filed a police report.
Nearly twenty-four hours after the incident, the big brother of Black Stars' skipper, who had a stint with Kumasi Asante Kotoko a couple of years ago, had failed to turn himself in.
Perhaps, it is this somewhat recalcitrant behaviour that compelled the DCOP Kofi Boakye to issue the warning.
GJA's Condemnation
In a related development, the Ashanti Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists' Association (GJA) has condemned" the attack "in no uncertain terms.
A statement by the Ashanti branch of the GJA said it finds it strange and shocking that such a nice opportunity given to the player should be abused.
It should be put on record that whether Asamoah Gyan likes it or not, the rumour is out there and the reporter without any malice wished that he used the occasion to clear himself, the statement signed by Listowell Yesu Bukarson, Chairman and Kingsley E. Hope, Secretary, said.
In any case, why did Baffour Gyan not lead thugs to attack Lawyer Justice Ampah when he called for the arrest of Asamoah Gyan for questioning in the wake of the Castro tragedy?
"The Gyan family must stop thinking that their so called popularity in football could clothe them with authority to treat journalists with contempt.
This is not to say that journalists are superior beings but why should a journalists be assaulted for asking a question? the statement asked.
Journalists cover stories with interest of all sections of the society in mind and so whether negative or positive stories emanating we cover without fear or favour.
The umbrella body of journalists also called on the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, COP Kofi Boakye not to renege on his promise to deal with the recalcitrants and prosecute them to deter others.
