Director of Regulations at the National Pension Regulatory Authority (NPRA,) Mr. Ernest Amartey Vondee, has lamented over inadequate resources at the Authority.
The NPRA which is tasked to ensure efficient, effective and equitable development and administration of pension’s scheme in Ghana can only boast of one office in the capital city, Accra.
Addressing a symposium on Tuesday September 23rd, 2014 in Accra by the Retired SSNIT Staff Association (RESSA), Mr. Vondee complained about the total neglect of the Authority by government.
According to him such a regulatory body that regulates the activity of Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) ought to be resourced adequately.
To regulate another state institution like SSNIT he added was a serious business that requires retooling of the Authority.
Mr. Vondee who was a former staff of SSNIT explained that though they [NPRA] had achieved some feat in their endeavour so far, there was still more to be done.
“For a huge and complex institution like SSNIT, we need more people like analysts, auditors and the like to do the job” he said.
He therefore advised employers to comply with the legal demands and obligations towards the social security and occupational pension schemes.
These obligations he mentioned are registering employees on the scheme, paying employees’ deductions.
He subsequently urged employers to provide administrative and accounting services required to enable a worker join and contribute to a personal pension scheme of the employee’s choice.
