Bishop Philip Ackam Newman of Macedonia Prayer Ministry International at Amasaman in the Greater Accra Region has made a passionate appeal to government to pay serious attention to agric sector especially by resuscitating all the state farms.
According to him, the agric sector is collapsing since the youth today are not being encouraged to venture into the sector adding that all state institutions including state farm have been sold to foreigners.
Speaking to The New Crusading GUIDE in an interview, the Bishop stressed that there is the need for the country to be committed to the spirit and letter of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme that demands targeting small-holder farmers especially the youth for poverty reduction, food security and economic growth.
Bishop Newman who declared this year as a year of preparation advised the Ghanaian youth to venture into farming to alleviate the level of poverty in the country.
He said besides creating jobs for themselves, engaging in agriculture would provide them a decent livelihood as it was profitable.
This, he explained in the fact that technocrats prefer going into farming on retirement instead of pursuing their professions on part time basis or consultancy.
He explained that farming entails but Aqua culture, plantain, maize, cassava cultivation besides cocoa cultivation and livestock.
Meanwhile, Bishop Newman has condemned indiscriminate disposal of refuse and the defecation in river bodies by people and called for the prosecution of those who flout sanitation bye-laws of the MMDAs.
He suggested that the spirit of communal labour should be rekindled in communities to ensure a healthy environment at all times to avoid outbreak of cholera and other diseases.
The Bishop assured Ghanaians that 2015 will be better than the previous year.
